Benny the Bunny could pack his yellow backpack and match his socks all by himself. But he didn’t know how to cope when something changed without warning…

Benny liked doing things on his own 🎵. He could zip up his jacket 🎵, too. Sometimes the zipper got a little stuck, but Benny knew to try again, right from the bottom.

That morning, he was extra eager to get ready. After a long summer break 🎵, he was going back to preschool! He tucked a shiny toy car from his grandparents into the little pocket of his backpack. He couldn’t wait to show it to his friend Buster the Puppy.

On the way, he held Papa Bunny’s hand and hopped over the cracks in the sidewalk 🎵. He knew this walk by heart. He knew which corner would bring the preschool fence into view and where the tree with a branch like a giant paw stood.

At preschool, everything had its own place, too. The blocks lived in a big box under the window, the books on a low shelf, and his jacket and backpack in the locker with the red rocket.

Benny loved that rocket.

The hallway smelled of soap and a freshly mopped floor. All around him were cheerful hellos, laughter, and the patter of slippers 🎵. After the quiet of the summer break, all that noise seemed a little too loud. Benny moved closer to Papa. But then he spotted the coatroom door and hurried toward his locker.

He stopped right in front of it 🎵.

A pink sweater hung beneath the rocket. A pair of yellow rain boots stood at the bottom of the locker, and a polka-dot bag dangled from the hook. Beside the locker, Tilly the Guinea Pig was taking off her shoes 🎵.

Benny looked at the rocket, then at the rain boots, then back at the rocket.

But that was his place.

After the summer break, the children had been given different lockers 🎵. Benny didn’t know that yet. No one had had a chance to show him where his things would go now.

He began to feel hot. His heart beat fast 🎵, and his paws curled into tight little fists. All his plans for the morning suddenly vanished from his head. All he could see was the pink sweater 🎵 hanging where his jacket should be.

STOMP! STOMP! STOMP! He thumped one back foot hard against the floor 🎵.

“That’s my rocket!” he shouted.

Before Papa could reach him, Benny pulled Tilly’s bag off the hook and threw it onto the floor 🎵. Out fell her slippers and a box of crayons she had brought for the classroom. The lid popped open 🎵, and the crayons rolled under the bench 🎵.

Tilly shrank back and burst into tears 🎵.

Several heads turned. Buster, who had just come into the coatroom, stopped in the doorway with one slipper in his paw.
