Hello! My name is Sophia and I’m an owl 🎵. I live in Pine Corner, in a hollow on the highest branch of the Great Pine. From there, I can see the entire forest! I know every tree, every bush, and every path.

How do I do it? I have a LIST! Yes, yes! I have a big list of everything that’s in the forest. I’m very proud of this list!

But today… today my list turned out to be USELESS 🎵!

Today, as usual, I woke up at dusk. (We owls sleep during the day and play at night. We’re a bit backward!)

I stretched my wings, straightened my feathers, and took out my list.

“Alright!” I said. “Today I’ll count all the pine trees in the forest. According to my list, there are exactly one hundred and forty-seven. And I, Sophia, am ALWAYS right!”

I flew proudly over the forest:

“One pine… two pines… three pines… FOUR PINES! Hoo-hoo, I’m so smart!”

But suddenly…

“OUCH!” I squeaked.

Some ugly, rude, horrible branch caught my wing!

“Let go! Let go right now!” I shouted at the branch. “I am an important owl! I have a LIST!”

But the branch didn’t listen (because, you know, branches don’t have ears).

WHOOSH! I fell like a stone!

“AAAAAAA!” I screamed. “This wasn’t on my list!”

BAM! I landed right in a big fern bush.

“Pfff! Ptui!” I spat out a fern leaf. “Terrible! Now my feathers are a mess!”

I stood up, shook myself off, and… blinked.

Behind the ferns was something dark 🎵. Something BIG. Something that WAS NOT ON MY LIST!

“WHAT?!” I shouted so loudly that the echo bounced off the trees: “What?! What?! What?!”

My big eyes got even bigger! My beak opened wide! My feathers stood on end like a hedgehog’s spines!

“A CAVE?!” I screeched. “HERE?! HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?! THIS IS CHEATING! THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!”

I quickly pulled out my list and began to read:

“Pines: one hundred and forty-seven. Raspberry bushes: twelve. Rocks: five hundred and eighteen. Puddles: seven… BUT NOWHERE DOES IT SAY: CAVE!”

I was so surprised that I sat down on a rock. My heart was beating 🎵: BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM! Like a drum!

“Impossible!” I said to myself. “I, Sophia, the wisest owl in all of Pine Corner, DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT A CAVE?!”

It was as if someone told me that two plus two equals five. Or that pine trees grow upside down. Or that Boris Bear doesn’t like honey!

COMPLETELY impossible!

“Wait, wait…” I thought. “Maybe I’m dreaming? Maybe this is a dream?”

I pinched my wing.
